Every day, children and young people across the world are exposed to domestic abuse in their homes.
Whether they hear it or experience it directly, the trauma can leave deep physiological and psychological wounds. These children often become the silent victims, overlooked in assessments, misunderstood in classrooms, and unsupported in care plans.
At Innovating Minds, we work with professionals across children’s social care to help them recognise and respond to this hidden harm. Trauma doesn’t always present as a child verbally telling their story. It can look like challenging behaviour, disengagement, anxiety, or withdrawal. Without a trauma-informed lens, these trauma reactions are easily missed and misinterpreted.
Early help is critical. When professionals are equipped to spot the signs and respond with the ability to offer co-regulate and support the child to process the trauma via the body, children can begin to heal. Our Healing Together programme is designed to do just that, empowering professionals to support healing sooner rather than later.
Domestic violence doesn’t discriminate. It affects families from all walks of life. And its impact on children is often invisible, until we choose to see it.
This October, let’s commit to seeing it.
